Budka Suflera - Poland - 1976

After my marriage ended I met a Polish girl in Vienna. Sweet thing she was and I got her to be my girlfriend for a few years. So, her dad ran this huge delapidated hotel somewhere past Villach near the Italian border and Polish school trips would stay there all the time and that was his business and all. So the girlfriend and I are staying there for a nice free week, walking in the mountains and all that, and one night she takes me down in the basement and she finds her dad's old records from Poland and says take what you want, so amongst the rubbish (and porn mags hidden in every sleeve) I made my first discoveries of Polish bands SBB and Budka Suflera. Anyway, this is the second album from Budka Suflera, taken here from the Polish CD re-issue from 1991.

Gordon Lightfoot - Sit Down Young Stranger - 1970

A nice early album from the Canadian legend that I picked up at a local charity shop. This album, from 1970, spawned the hit "If You Could Read My Mind" and the album would, in fact, be later re-issued under that title. Gordon Lightfoot was born in Orillia, Canada and I remember when I was young I would often pass through Orillia while travelling between Toronto and the Muskoka region of Ontario. The sign welcoming people to the town stated "home of Gordon Lightfoot", though he hadn't lived there in a long time, and I thought it was a real swizz, one of my first realisations of false advertising. Coincidentally, years later when I was living over-seas, my resume declared that I had gone to college in Orillia. I don't think there is a college in Orillia. Ha.

Michael G Waite and Eyes - Canada - 1982

I bought this album expecting it to be something akin to Terry Brooks & Strange or Yahowa, what with the strange 60s warlock looking Mr. Waite on the covers, not to mention a list of guest musicians including Kim Mitchell and Nash The Slash. However, the music has a strong new-waveish sound in many places that really shapes the album as a whole. If someone else had told me that before I bought the album, I might have thought twice about buying it. However, I find this to be a very good album that I have listened to many times.
The original Canadian issue was released as a limited edition on slightly marbled light pink vinyl. The American issue of the same year was on black vinyl and omitted the middle name "Gregtheodeg" on cover and label. As well, there is a noticeable tone difference to the covers. Pictures are from the Canadian issue.

Kex - Hungary - 1969-1971

Kex

I don't know much about this Hungarian band. I bought this CD re-issue at Ton-Um-Ton in Vienna (my fave record store in the world). This is a compilation of their work from 69-71. Enjoy.
